The Verdict on Benefit's They're Real Collection

9 November 2014

So it's been a while since I last posted, but with a holiday in late August, freshers week and settling in to my third year of uni, my blog has managed to take a bit of a back seat. But I am now back, and aim to give you all a weekly dose of beauty and lifestyle.

Benefit recently launched an eyeliner and remover to accompany their They're Real mascara, forming  a mini collection. With excellent promotion, the mascara is now the UK's #1 and the push up gel liner has been written about by seemingly every blogger under the sun. Having now tried and tested every product in the range, I will now break down each of them and determine whether They're Real is worth the hype.

They're Real Mascara - £19.50
It has now been two years since this mascara first launched, and when it did, everyone was talking about it, and at first I was sceptical about the hype. However, my best friend claimed it to be the best mascara she had ever tried, and after reading endless praises for it, I took the plunge earlier this year with a handy ASOS discount (because I felt I couldn't justify spending the full price on a mascara).
My reaction to my first try can be summarised in three words: it didn't disappoint.
The bristles on the plastic wand are perfectly aligned to ensure that application is clump-free and the domed edge makes even the out-corner and smallest of lashes easy to reach. I'd describe the formulation as gel-like, as it is quite wet, which makes for an easy application with no smudging, clumping or drying out. It is also long-wearing, after a few coats you are good to go for the rest of the day (or night), as I have never found the need to reapply this mascara.
Although I don't feel like it makes my lashes look fake (judge for yourself in the pictures below), it definitely adds volume, length, a curl and helps lift my eyelashes. The jet-black, glossy finish, however, could look unnatural on some, but as I have very dark lashes and brows, this has never been a problem for me.
Despite the high price-tag, I would definitely recommend trying this mascara if you haven't done so already. It is definitely worth the hype it has received, I just hope Benefit bring out a waterproof version of this soon.

They're Real Push-up Liner - £18.50
After the success of the mascara and reading about it on every blog, I was really looking forward to trying out the push-up liner. In my makeover at Benefit's pop-up pub for the world cup, I really liked the way the liner looked on me and luckily the event offered a 10% discount of Benefit's products so I snapped it up.
After constant trial and error, I still can't fully master this liner and despite watching Benefit's tutorials I still can't achieve a perfect flick. I am really disappointed with the way this product has turned out.
The waterproof formula sets very quickly, making it very difficult to correct and remove even the tiniest of mistakes without rubbing for a good ten seconds and leaving a bright red mark around your eye. I have also found that the formula can dry out within the pen and have found clumps to come out of the tube, as well as flaking on the eyelid when I have applied more that one layer on the line. This becomes a problem when wearing the liner over shadow because it appears grey instead of the desired jet-black.
With similar, cheaper alternatives to the gel push-up liner (see Maybelline's Lasting Drama Gel Liner), I do feel that I could have spent this money elsewhere and that Benefit put more thought into the packaging of this product than the formula itself.

They're Real Remover - £14.50
I tried this remover out at the pop-up pub event, and although it worked like a dream I have not purchased it due to its hefty price-tag. As a student, I personally felt that £14.50 was too much to spend on a make-up remover but if you do have a bit of cash to spare and you are curious by this product I would recommend it.
The formulation is creamy and milky, and so feels rather comforting on the skin. What's more it definitely works. I have already mentioned how stubborn the They're Real Liner is, but with a gentle swirl in application, the liner easily lifted off the skin. The remover makes the perfect partner for the liner, and therefore should work wonders on all waterproof eye make-up.

How the range looks on...
(Apologies for my messy brows)
Have any of you tried out the products from this collection? What do you think of Benefit?
And what liquid eyeliner would you recommend?

  1. I've tried the mascara and I hated it. It did nothing for me and I get so angry every time I remember how much I spent on it! I'm a fan of UB perversion and the lash primer subversion - so much better than Benefits they're real!

    1. Ah that's a shame that you didn't get on with the mascara! I feel the same way when I think of how much I spent on the liner. I've never actually heard of the mascaras you've mentioned but I will definitely check them out next time I'm near an Urban Decay counter - thanks Corinne :) x

  5. I'm actually allergic to the mascara. I had infected eyes for a week after using it! But I don't mind the gel liner. I mean, the formula IS kind of crap, it dries up and becomes useless... but when you DO get it on your lashline it is just SO BLACK and doesn't budge. So, it has its pros and cons.

My holy grail eyeliner is the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. I have such watery, blinky eyes and oily eyelids and it is AMAZING.

    1. Ah no, that is such a shame! I agree the formula for the liner isn't the best and its a rare occasion that I do get in bang on my lash-line, but even then for me it hasn't been that black.
I have oily eyelids too, so will be sure to check the Stila liner out, thanks for the recommendation :)
